- Tension between the couple intensified during a couples retreat, including disputes over attraction, accusations of flirting, and repeated conflicts about feeling dismissed and unheard.
- Both concluded they were incompatible and emotionally exhausted, agreeing that ending the relationship was healthier than continuing a toxic cycle of arguments and power struggles.
The newlyweds are feeling the pressure as the countdown dwindles on Married at First Sight, and another Season 20 couple decided to end the experiment just before Decision Day.
Not long after Nick Unlenhuth and Courteney Landis' break-up earlier this season, Devin Short and Caitlin Grimm called it quits in Episode 17. The Seattle couple struggled throughout their MAFS experience, from the moment they went on their honeymoon to the end of the experiment.
As they attended a couples retreat with the rest of the MAFS Season 20 cast ahead of Decision Day in August 20's batch of episodes, several couples came to blows over lingering concerns in their relationships. Caitlin told Devin they were making strides in their relationship, but Devin worried that Caitlin wasn't attracted to him and wasn't leaning into the experience.
Caitlin maintained she had desire for Devin — arguing they should "hook up or break up" — but they continued to struggle to get on the same romantic page. Here's how it all fell apart:

An argument set the tone for Devin and Caitlin's intense breakup on MAFS
A group game led the couple to argue after the other MAFS newlyweds named Caitlin as the most likely to get the "ick" from her own marriage. The prompt struck a chord with Devin, leading to an intense 2 a.m. argument that set a tense tone for the next day.
There was slight hope after the couple went on a hike and talked about some of their issues, but not for long. Another group party with the couples soon dissolved after Devin felt Caitlin was flirting with Mecca Amen, BelleJolie Force's MAFS husband.
"That's not energy she gives me, so why are you giving it to someone else?" Devin said in his private interview. "It's like, how do you want me to take this? You know what I mean? Because I know I can't just let it go."
Devin was fuming by the "overstep" and Caitlin "playing into it," leading to an argument in the living room. As Caitlin tried to shut down the "dumb" accusations and de-escalate, Devin felt she was dismissing him and stormed off.
Their conflict continued the next morning as Devin was still upset over Caitlin's actions, and Caitlin felt she couldn't get a word in.
"I don't believe your point ... We have nothing to hold on to in this relationship, obviously, and you have given me nothing," Devin said, going on to tell Caitlin, "I'm not gonna sit here and be disrespected... That's why I'm f---ing done. I've done nothing but try to have healthy conversations and try to have that exchange, and you do not get it."

Caitlin and Devin mutually ended their marriage on MAFS Season 20
While Devin threw in the towel, Caitlin wasn't far behind. "I'm just having the thought of, 'What the hell am I doing here? Like, I would literally strangle my friends if I watched them deal with the b------t that is happening here and that you're putting me through. So, to be so honest, on the couch in the moment, when I did say those things, it was already done in my head."
Caitlin went on say, "Never once in my life did I feel like I was backed into so many corners and so overanalyzed and nitpicked."
"We're not gonna see eye to eye on this. I don't understand the point of us continuing this conversation even further," Caitlin said with finality while leaving the room. "I think that, as a human, you're fantastic. Clearly not compatible. And I think we end the conversation there. Calling it is the best choice."
Needless to say, you could cut the tension with a knife as the couples gathered for breakfast. Addressing the tension head-on, Devin announced that he and Caitlin had ended their relationship and he was heading back to Seattle.
"We don't see eye to eye," Devin told the group, parroting Caitlin's words from earlier. "Our communication is not up to par; it's just a continual power struggle of who needs to be right. I don't want to keep playing into that toxic pattern; it's emotionally draining."
"I'm tired of the emotional weight that I feel like I've been carrying. Just us constantly arguing," Caitlin shared. "We weren't even arguing in the same conversation last night."
"Because you don't listen," Devin snapped. "You don't listen to the other side."
Caitlin and Devin were both at their "wits' end" and couldn't see a future in which they worked out.
Just five days away from Decision Day, Caitlin and Devin called it quits, setting the stakes even higher for the remaining couples during the Season 20 finale and reunion of Married at First Sight, streaming exclusively on Peacock.
