Phoenix Suns vs. Portland Trail Blazers
The Suns (8–6, 8th in Western Conference) are a hard-fighting team who make the most out of every second of play time. They do not give up, and more often than not, that’s paid off in the form of more possessions won and more chances to score. They are coming off a frustrating loss to the Hawks but before that, they were on a five-game winning streak. The team had to play without guards Grayson Allen and Jalen Green in that loss. Green will be out for a few weeks, and Allen is currently day-to-day. If he plays, Allen could be the difference maker for the Suns against Portland. He’s been phenomenal for Phoenix this year, averaging 18.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists this season. Until Sunday, he’d started every game for the Suns this season. Forward Ryan Dunn started as guard in his place and scored a respectable 12 points against Atlanta while Collin Gillespie proved to be a reliable backup optionwith a 15-point, seven-assist performance in 32 minutes. Devin Booker continues to be the driving force of this Suns team, averaging 28.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 7 assists per game this season. With Allen out, he’s the only player left to have started every game. When the Suns’ starting five are all healthy, this team feels like they can wear down any opponent. If they can find cohesion against Portland no matter who starts, and keep getting those offensive rebounds, the Suns can bounce back on Tuesday night.
The Trail Blazers (6–7, 9th in Western Conference) find themselves below .500, but solidly in the middle of the pack at this early point in the season. Unfortunately for them, they’ve now lost their last two games. In an NBA Cup matchup against the Rockets, they were outscored 140–116. Now, they’re coming off a 138–133 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. This team needs to bounce back on Tuesday, but that’ll be a tall order against a tough Phoenix team. Still, there’s reason for Portland to be optimistic. They just nabbed a season-high 22 offensive rebounds against the Grizzlies, and guard Shaedon Sharpe put up 36 points in his best game of the season so far. What’s really causing problems for Portland are injuries at the point guard position. Damian Lillard is out for the season with an Achilles injury. Scoot Henderson is out with a hamstring tear, and Blake Wesley is out for another couple of months with a broken foot. For much of the early season, that’s left Jrue Holiday to lead the team, and he’s done an amazing job so far. He’s averaging 16.7 points per game with 8.3 assists and 5.1 rebounds. A sore calf kept him out of the game against the Mavericks, and the team felt his absence. He’s day to day currently, but keeping him out on Sunday was a gametime decision, meaning it’s likely he’ll play on Tuesday. If Sharpe can put together another dominant performance and Holiday gets back up to full speed, this Portland team can deliver the home crowd a win on Coast 2 Coast Tuesday.
