In an all-London derby, Chelsea visit Spurs at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a Premier League fixture filled with plenty of history.

Tottenham v Chelsea

Currently sitting third in the Premier League table fresh off a 3–0 thumping of Everton last weekend, Spurs have enjoyed a good beginning to life under Thomas Frank. Although there have been some signs of inconsistency, such as a 2–0 defeat to Newcastle in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, Spurs have only two defeats in the league this season and are still unbeaten in the Champions League after three matches. Thomas Frank’s men are only five points off Arsenal at the top of the table and they’ll be eager to close that gap even further when they host Chelsea on Saturday. It looks like Frank still hasn’t found his preferred starting 11, particularly in attack, but summer signing Mohammed Kudus will surely feature up front given his superb start for his new club. As arguably Spurs’ most threatening attacking option, Kudus has one goal and four assists in all competitions this year. In terms of other attacking options, goalcontributions have been spread around throughout the team so far this season. Interestingly, center-back Micky van de Ven is tied with Richarlison for the team lead in goals scored at three each, followed by Brennan Johnson, Pape Sarr, and Joao Palhinha at two apiece. Frank likes that goals are coming from all areas, but will want a more consistent source of output, especially from his No. 9. Richarlison has filled in admirably for the injured Dominic Solanke, but has not scored since September and summer signing Randal Kolo Muani has yet to score.Spurs are also dealing with injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, two of their most creative attacking options. Yet, they are still tied for first in most goals scored in Premier League this season. Defensively, Spurs have been stout with four clean sheets in nine matches and only seven goals conceded. With injuries to Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie, Kevin Danso and Djed Spence have filled in well. Together with Van de Ven and Pedro Porro, Spurs have a formidable back line that will have its work cut out for them keeping a potent Chelsea attack in check.

After going unbeaten in four games to start the season, Chelsea have now lost three matches in the Premier League, including a 2–1 defeat to Sunderland last weekend. Consequently, they’ve dropped to 9th in the table, eight points off league-leaders Arsenal. The Blues have struggled for consistency this season under Enzo Maresca, and will be without star man Cole Palmer for the foreseeable future as he recovers from a groin injury. However, they were able to survive in the League Cup with a 4–3 victory over Wolves on Wednesday. Yet, this game is a must-win for Chelsea against their London rivals if they hope to keep their aspirations of finishing in the top four alive. Despite Palmer’s absence, the Blues have been scoring for fun in recent weeks, totaling 15 goals in their last seven matches in all competitions. Similar to Tottenham, the goals have been shared throughout the entire team. Moisés Caicedo andEnzo Fernández are tied for the club lead with three goals each, followed by summer signing Joao Pedro with two goals to go along with three assists. Joao Pedro enjoyed a strong start to his Chelsea career, but has not scored or assisted since a September 13th match against Brentford. Maresca will need him to regain his early season form if the Blues want to take anything from this game. Joining him in attack will likely be Pedro Neto who is in good form with a goal and two assists in his last two Premier League matches. Maresca has been tinkering with the rest of the front line, and has plenty of options to choose from in the form of Alejandro Garnacho, Marc Guiu, Jamie Gittens, and Estevao. Defensively, Chelsea have struggled to keep clean sheets, with only two in their last ten matches in all competitions. After losing Levi Colwill to a long-term injury, Trevoh Chalobah has stepped up to replace him. Together with Reece James, who has hopefully put his injury issues behind him, and Marc Cucurella, the Blues’ backline will need to be firm away from home if the team hopes to take points from this game.
