In a Western Conference showdown between two teams hoping to make the playoffs, the Timberwolves host the Suns on Peacock NBA Monday

Phoenix Suns vs. Minnesota Timberwolves

Fresh off defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in an impressive 125–108 victory on Monday night, the Suns will take on the Houston Rockets on Friday before visiting the Timberwolves. The Suns have been one of the NBA’s biggest surprises this season. Despite losing Kevin Durant to the Rockets and Bradley Beal to the Clippers this offseason, Phoenix is 13-9 and in 7th place in the Western Conference standings. Many predicted that this would be a rebuild year for the Suns after breaking up their Big Three, but head coach Jordan Ott has proven the doubters wrong with his team’s good start to the season. The Suns received Dillon Brooks as part of the Durant trade, and Brooks seems to have found a new home in Phoenix. He’s averaging 22.3 points per game (his highest since joining the league) and has scored 25 or more points in six of his last ten games. He has been on fire for the Suns and his most recent 33-point performance against the Lakers helped the carry the team to victory over one of the best in the Western Conference. Another bright spark for Jordan Ott has been Collin Gillespie. Gillespie is currently playing on a one-year $2.3 million deal, and his recent performances are making an argument for him to earn significantly more than that next season. Gillespie has scored 20 or more points in three of his last four games and is averaging 44.4% from beyond the arc on the year. The Suns will need Brooks and Gillespie to continue their hot starts to the season against the Timberwolves on Monday night, as they will likely be without both Devin Booker and Jalen Green due to injuries. Booker’s groin injury does not appear serious but he will be sidelined for at least a week (injury was suffered against the Lakers on Dec 1), while Green is nearing a return after missing the Suns’ last 12 games with a hamstring injury.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have won four straight and currently sit in 6th place in the Western Conference standings with a 14-8 record, one spot ahead of the Suns. Timberwolves fans will be happy that star guard Anthony Edwards is back in the lineup after missing an earlier portion of the season with a hamstring injury. Edwards is averaging 28.8 points this season and was on fire to end the month of November with six games straight scoring 31 points or more. He ended that streak with a quiet 11-point performance against the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday night but will look to bounce back against the Suns on Monday. Supporting him will be Julius Randle, who has enjoyed a good start to the season. Randle is averaging 22.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, which are both up from last year’s averages. Coach Chris Finch will need Randle to keep producing at a higher level if the Timberwolves hope to improve on their back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances. The Timberwolves have a strong supporting cast behind Edwards and Randle, namely Donte DiVincenzo, Rudy Gobert, Jaden McDaniels, and Naz Reid. Already on a four-game win streak, Minnesota is capable of making a push for the top four spots in the Western Conference and that must start with wins against the Clippers on Saturday followed by the Suns on Monday.
