Houston Texans vs. Kansas City Chiefs
The Texans (7–5, 3rd in AFC South) find themselves just one game behind both leaders in what has become a very competitive division. In the final full month of the season, the AFC South looks up for grabs. The Colts dropped two games straight, allowing the Jaguars to catch up and take first place on tiebreakers. The good news for the Texans is they’ve beaten both teams in the last month. With a four-game win streak going into Sunday night, Houston has all the momentum they could ask for. They’ll need it too. With the Colts and Jags playing each other this weekend, one will take the undisputed lead. The Texans need a win on Sunday to keep pace if they hope to overtake either team in the remaining weeks. Quarterback C.J. Stroud has thrown for 1,978 yards and 11 touchdowns. In the last month, he’s been able to keep the Texans just ahead of their opponents through all four quarters. The real secret sauce for the Texans has been the defense. Stroud gets the Texans out in front, and the defense makes sure they stay there. They allow the fewest fourth-quarter points in the league, and lead the NFL in interceptions and sacks. When the game is on the line, this unit, particularly defensive end Will Anderson and safety Calen Bullock, will shut down plays and take the ball away. If they can do that to Patrick Mahomes, the Texans can earn their fifth straight win on Sunday.
The Chiefs (6–6, 3rd in AFC West) find themselves at .500 exactly heading into this one. With big victories over the Ravens (37–20), and the Lions (30–17) earlier in the season, this Kansas City team is still capable of the brilliance we’ve grown used to seeing from them. They just haven’t been as consistent as they’ve been in years past. They could be eliminated from the playoffs this week if they lose this game and either the Denver Broncos or L.A. Chargers win their games. That makes this a must-win for Kansas City. Their season is on the line, and they’ll be playing like it. It’ll be on quarterback Patrick Mahomes to avoid the Houston pass rush and get the ball downfield by any means necessary. That will likely include running it himself, which he’s been doing even more of this season. Mahomes has racked up 348 rushing yards this season, and we expect him to add a lot more on Sunday night. Kansas City has struggled on defense this year. They allowed the Cowboys to convert nine out of their sixteen third downs last week. Those big stops aren’t coming the way they used to, and as a result, those close one-score games usually end up going to the other team. While defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo hopes to improve that this weekend, the offense can help out by not making this a one-score game. If Mahomes can match the Houston defense’s intensity and get the ball into the hands of his receivers quickly, Kansas City will keep their season alive on Sunday night.
