"May I present to you the award-winning staff of the Toledo Truth Teller," Editor-in-Chief Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson) says at the top of The Paper's first Season 2 trailer released on August 12.
Aside from the typical shenanigans of delivering news-worthy stories to Toledo residents, there's plenty of workplace drama on the horizon. The secret office romance between Ned and Mare Pritti (Chelsea Frei) seems to be heating up, with the trailer showing several scenes of them canoodling behind closed doors. But an editor dating someone on his staff won't be an easy headline to break, so Ned heads to HR to cover his bases and encourage her not to mention anything to the staff.
"Oh my God, HR has got your back," the HR rep tells Ned. "Let me know if and when you guys have sex and how it is and what positions or whatever."
"Do I need to tell you that?" Ned asked helplessly.
Meanwhile, after a triumphant face-lift and major improvements to the paper from the first season, Ned is under more pressure than ever to continue delivering hard-hitting stories. The staff of the Toledo Truth Teller pays the price of this eagerness, exploring angles high and low for a potential piece.
"We are on an official tornado watch," Ned announced to the writers in another scene from Season 2's sneak peek. Wanting to get one of his brightest on the story, Travis (Eric Rahill) becomes an amateur storm chaser.
"Is my car capable of storm chasing?" Travis asks the film crew before he and Adelola (Gbemisola Ikumelo) are seen panicking on the road as the storm quickly approaches. After running from the vehicle and abandoning the mission, Travis later humorously concludes, "No, not really."

In the first-look photos of The Paper's upcoming season, the Toledo Truth Teller staff is back in the newsroom, looking eager to get to those pressing stories. And these reporters are getting into the field.

The Paper follows the reporters of a historic Midwestern newspaper and its dedicated Editor-in-Chief, Ned Sampson, who is recruited to revive The Toledo Truth Teller to its original glory. As a certified spin-off of The Office, the documentary crew that once captured the Scranton paper company's wild antics has returned to film the latest round of workplace shenanigans. From one paper matter to another paper, get it?
“[Ned] thinks that he can revive the paper with a concentration on local, objective content, [and] original content,” creator Greg Daniels told Peacock Blog. "A lack of resources and money forces Ned to recruit employees from other areas of the paper’s parent company, Enervate, which also owns a toilet paper brand called Softees. He takes the ad salespeople and the accountants and the people who drive the trucks and turns them into reporters.”
