The 10-episode series — created by Poehler and Mike Schur — is based on Kate Myers’ 2023 novel Excavations and tells the story of four women archaeologists who find themselves neck-deep in an international conspiracy after uncovering a priceless artifact. Amy Poehler says the unique setting of DIG is "a really funny place"
Set at an archaeological dig site in Greece, Poehler told TV Insider that the series' unique backdrop makes for the perfect breeding ground for laughs for a few reasons.
"It is about the kind of crazy stuff that happens during one of these archaeological digs," Poehler told TV Insider. "You know, a dig is a really funny place where a lot of young, energetic people show up to try to find things and where some serious and professional archaeologists try to make their careers. It's part summer camp, part mysterious uncovering of relics. We thought it would be a really good place to make jokes and create characters that you like."

Poehler, who reunited with Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine creator Mike Schur in DIG, raved about the "deep humanity" the acclaimed television writer gives to every show he's been a part of through the years.
"I think a good comedy creates characters that make you care enough to wonder what they do on the weekend when you're not watching them," Poehler explained. "What's cool about Mike's work is there's not a reluctance to find the deep humanity in his characters, and you can feel it."
