Chicago Bears vs. San Francisco 49ers
The Bears (11–4, 1st in NFC North) are coming off a thrilling overtime victory over the rival Green Bay Packers. This team has become the king of comeback victories this season. Like many of their 11 wins, the Bears found themselves down late in the game. With two minutes to go, the Bears were 10 points behind the Packers. Kicker Cairo Santos brought them within a touchdown of tying the game, and cornerback Josh Blackwell recovered the ensuing onside kick. From that point on, quarterback Caleb Williams looked almost perfect. With 24 seconds left in the game Williams hit rookie wide receiver Jahdae Walker in the endzone to tie the game. In overtime, Williams hit another perfect pass to wide receiver DJ Moore to win. Comebacks like that have been the story of the Bears this whole season. They started the season 0–2 and went on an 11–2 run after that. That win, plus the Detroit Lions’ loss on Sunday, means that the Bears have already clinched their first playoff berth since 2020. Head coach Ben Johnson has turned this team around, taking them to the top of their division in just one season with the team. Williams still isn’t the most consistent quarterback (he’s thrown six interceptions this season), but he has the mental fortitude to turn games around. No matter how far down the Bears are, Williams can lock in and get them back ahead. If he keeps doing that, there’s no team Chicago can’t beat.
The 49ers (11–4, 2nd in NFC West) are one game behind the division-leading Seattle Seahawks and tied with the Los Angeles Rams (though they own the tiebreaker). Despite dealing with injuries throughout the season, there’s so much talent on this team that they’ve been able to stay in the race for the division. They’re still in contention for the No. 1 seed in the NFC if they win this game and the Seahawks lose theirs. Like their opponents this week, they already clinched a playoff berth after the Lions lost last week. The 49ers are coming off a stunning 48–27 win over the Indianapolis Colts in which quarterback Brock Purdy threw for 295 yards and five touchdowns. Running back Christian McCaffrey has also been instrumental in their success this season with 1,039 rushing yards and nine touchdowns this season. When he’s healthy, which he has been this season, this team is unstoppable. With a running threat like McCaffrey on the field, and an accurate passer like Purdy at the helm, they can take apart almost any defense. They may be without some key receivers though. Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall and tight end George Kittle arelisted as questionable for this Sunday’s game. Kittle left the game against the Colts with an ankle injury, but he’s optimistic about playing this week. If he’s ruled out, it’ll be up to Luke Farrell to step up in the tight end position. If Purdy can keep his accuracy up and keep getting this team first downs though, this team will give the home crowd a big win on Sunday Night Football.
