Elizabeth Banks' movies, from Wet Hot American Summer to The Hunger Games
After an early string of guest spots on shows including All My Children, Sex and the City, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Banks landed her first memorable movie role. Like pre-fame Bradley Cooper, she was in 2001's cult-hit comedy Wet Hot American Summer (she returned for the sequel TV series 14 years later).
Banks stole all of her scenes as Miss Brant in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and its two sequels. She also had 00's roles in Catch Me If You Can, Seabiscuit, Slither, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, The Baxter, and Role Models — the latter three reuniting her with her Wet Hot American Summer collaborators.
And then there's Banks' iconic Hunger Games character, Effie Trinket, who guides protagonists Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) through the finer points of appeasing Panem's high society. Effie became a fan-favorite character thanks to Banks' meme-worthy line readings like "That is mahogany!"
Banks also took the lead in the films Walk of Shame and Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy, proving she excels in both comedy and drama. Her ability to imbue any line with meaning makes her great at voiceover work, leading to roles in hit animated movies like The Lego Movie and Migration, a Mike White script Banks praised to NBC Insider.
“He crafted a really lovely story and honed into the dynamic between our two characters right off the bat," Banks said in 2023. "But I think making these characters our own is part of the collaborative process. We do it over such a long period of time, so we see our characters from sketches, and they’ve done character development in illustrations… and then suddenly it’s like whoa, there’s Kumail's voice, and Danny DeVito’s here, and it just builds and builds and builds. It’s a really fun but long process."

Elizabeth Banks on TV: Modern Family, Scrubs, 30 Rock & more
To Scrubs fans, Banks is Dr. Kim Briggs, a recurring role she played from 2006-2009. Her portrayal of CNBC reporter Avery Jessup, Jack Donaghy's wife, nabbed her two of her four Emmy nominations. She earned a third for playing Sal on seven episodes of Modern Family.
In 2020, she played real-life feminist activist Jill Ruckelshaus in Mrs. America, and in 2025, she starred opposite Jessica Biel in the limited series The Better Sister.
As a director, Elizabeth Banks is...pitch perfect
While keeping up a steady stream of acting roles in Power Rangers and Call Jane, Banks transitioned to directing. After helming two shorts and a segment in 2013's Movie 43, she directed the second (and highest-grossing!) installment in the Pitch Perfect series. Banks also produced the Pitch Perfect trilogy through Brownstone Productions, her company with her husband Max Handelman. Together, they've co-produced TV and movies such as Shrill, Bumper In Berlin, Bottoms, and NBC's two-season drama Found.
She followed that up with a reboot of Charlie's Angels and the gutsy Cocaine Bear.
She's the Emmy-nominated host of Press Your Luck!
Banks has hosted the reboot of trivia-based game show Press Your Luck! since 2019. It's a surprisingly emotional process for Banks, as the prizes are often dream-come-true opportunities for the contestants.
“When somebody is really winning and that Whammy comes out, people get very sad,” she revealed to Variety. “When somebody loses, that actually requires the most energy. When somebody’s winning, we’re riding a wave and everybody’s excited. But when that Whammy comes out, it can really be devastating, and especially when someone is really racking up a prize that’s meaningful to them. It breaks our hearts, and that’s when the emotion really gets to me.”
In 2025, she was honored with an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Host for a Game Show.
Watch Elizabeth Banks in The Miniature Wife on Peacock starting April 9.
