With the World Cup traditionally featuring 32 nations, the increase to 48 will mean that the group stage and knockout round will change in terms of their usual format. Starting with the group stage, the 48 teams will be split across 12 groups of four teams each. The group placements have already been determined prior to the start of the tournament, having been randomly drawn from seeding pots based on rankings from the World Cup qualification phase.

Each nation will play three games in a round-robin format in the group stage, one against each other nation in their group. Based on how they perform in those matches, the top two teams in each group’s standings will automatically advance to the knockout round. With the 2026 World Cup being the first to have a 32-team knockout round (double the previous format), the final eight remaining spots will be reserved for the eight best third-place teams.

What was the format for the World Cup with 32 teams?

With 32 teams, the previous World Cup format involved eight groups of four nations each. After each team played each other once in the group stage, the top two teams in each group’s standings advanced to a 16-team knockout round.

What are the tiebreakers for the group stage?

If multiple nations in a group are level on points after the group stage is complete, the final ranking will be determined by the following criteria:

  1.  Head-to-head points between the teams involved
  2. Head-to-head goal difference between the teams involved
  3. Head-to-head goals scored between the teams involved
  4. Goal difference across all group matches
  5. Goals scored across all group matches
  6. Team Conduct score: Determined by number of yellow and red cards received
  7. FIFA World Ranking

How are the eight best third-place teams determined?

Across all 12 groups, once the group stage is complete, the eight best third-place teams will be decided based on following criteria:

  1. Most Points
  2. Highest Goal Difference
  3. Most Goals Scored
  4. Team Conduct Score
  5. FIFA World Ranking

How does the knockout round work?

Once the 32 teams that advance out of the group stage are finalized, they will engage in a single elimination knockout tournament. This will begin with a Round of 32 bracket and finish with the World Cup Final on Saturday, July 18.
