Who is in the cast of Midwinter Break?
Midwinter Break is a two-hander focusing on the long-time marriage of Stella (Lesley Manville) and Gerry (Ciarán Hinds).
Manville is an English actress well-known for her theater, film and television work. She’s the recipient of two Laurence Olivier Awards and Critic's Circle Theatre Awards. In 2018, she was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread. Most recently of note, she played Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon in The Crown and Ada Harris in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (also streaming on Peacock).

Hailing from Belfast, Ireland, Ciarán Hinds is also a well-known and much-lauded actor of stage and screen. He was multi-nominated and won the National Board of Review award for Best Supporting Actor for Belfast (2021). Viewers may recognize him as Mance Rayder from Game of Thrones, Sir John Franklin in The Terror, or The Dark Wizard in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
What is Midwinter Break about?
Adapted from Bernard MacLaverty’s 2017 novel of the same name, Midwinter Break is an intimate story about a long-married couple facing a midlife impasse as empty nesters with their only child living abroad. So Stella books an impromptu winter getaway to Amsterdam as a gift for Gerry, so they can recapture their passion for life again. But the trip ends up dredging up long concealed emotions stemming from an act of violence they experienced in their home country of Ireland during The Troubles. It forced them to live their lives as ex-pats in England, and this trip will see them finally confront everything they’ve been holding back from one another for the last 30 years.
