Key Takeaways

  • Peacock is streaming the first three Friday the 13th films throughout October, covering the reopening of Camp Crystal Lake, Jason Voorhees’ emergence as a killer, and the events leading to his iconic reign of terror.
  • Crystal Lake, Peacock's 8-episode prequel series dropping October 15, retells the origin story through the eyes of his mother, Pam Voorhees (Linda Cardellini).
  • Pam Voorhees is a main character in the first Friday the 13th film released in 1980.

Forty-six years after the seminal slasher film Friday the 13th introduced Jason Voorhees into the horror lexicon, Peacock Original series Crystal Lake takes us back to where it all began.

Created by It: Welcome to Derry showrunner Brad Caleb Kane and co-produced by A24, the 8-episode binge drop prequel series reimagines the events of the first Friday the 13th film. It's told through the perspective of Pamela Voorhees (Linda Cardellini), Jason's grieving mother, who was only a major character in the first movie. But a close watch of Crystal Lake reveals plenty of easter-egg connections to the first entry in the franchise.

Whether you've never watched the original Friday the 13th movie and its subsequent sequels or you're looking to refresh your memory before the show's October 15 release, Peacock has the first three films available to stream all October long. Time to catch up on your slasher icon history.

Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

Taking place five years after the events of Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th Part 2 introduces a camp counselor training complex set up near the abandoned remnants of Camp Crystal Lake. The murderous deeds of Pamela Voorhees feed a local urban legend: Jason survived, and he haunts the woods seeking vengeance for his mother by killing anyone he comes across. After some of the young counselors-in-training are found murdered, owner Paul Holt (John Furey) and his assistant Ginny Field (Amy Steel) set out to discover the truth about Jason’s legacy.

Picking up not long after the murder spree in Friday the 13th Part 2, Chris Higgins (Dana Kimmell) and her friends arrive at her family’s cabin, Higgins Haven, on the shores of Crystal Lake. Turns out Jason has been hiding out in the Higgins barn, and their arrival instigates a bloody game of cat-and-mouse for Chris and her friends.
