Key Takeaways

  • Peacock's Crystal Lake serves as a prequel focused on Pamela Voorhees, taking place before Jason becomes the hockey-mask-wearing killer associated with the later Friday the 13th films.
  • Jason’s burlap mask in Crystal Lake is tied to his origin story and mystery arc, reflecting his hydrocephalus, the bullying he endured, and the uncertainty surrounding whether he survived his drowning.
  • Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane confirmed the absence of the hockey mask was a timeline decision rather than a rights issue, since the iconic mask was not introduced until Friday the 13th Part 3.

With the streaming release of Peacock's Crystal Lake on October 15, fans of the Friday the 13th franchise are already asking why we never see Jason Voorhees (Callum Vinson) in his iconic hockey mask. There are several reasons for that decision, primarily that Crystal Lake is a prequel series centered on Jason’s mom, Pamela Voorhees (Linda Cardellini), so it’s set before Jason’s antics made him the serial killer horror fans know today.

Crystal Lake showrunner Brad Caleb Kane is also a fan first, so he’s got some good reasons for why the hockey mask is sitting on the sidelines — for now. Find out why, below.

Why Jason Voorhees wears a burlap mask in Crystal Lake

In both the original Friday the 13th movie and in the Crystal Lake series, Jason Voorhees is born with hydrocephalus, which is when cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain. Neither baby nor young Jason is physically revealed in the first film, and audiences only get to see a glimpse of him when he rises up from the lake in the last moments of the film.

However, Crystal Lake is built around audiences getting to see the consequential pain of Jason's condition with severe headaches and seizures, and then the ridicule he experiences from other kids because of his expanded cranium. After Jason drowns in the first episode, the series turns his ultimate fate into a mystery that Pam pursues throughout. She believes to her core that Jason didn’t die. When a lone figure subsequently appears in the woods, the audience and Pam are meant to question if that’s Jason or someone else.

When Jason comes out from the shadows in a burlap mask at the end of the season, it’s for a dual purpose. One, the mask extends the mystery until the season finale when Pam finally gets her confirmation that Jason is alive. And two, it’s an Easter egg for Friday the 13th fans who recognize that Jason wears a similar fabric mask with a single eye hole in the character’s real debut in Friday the 13th Part 2.

Why Jason isn’t wearing his famous hockey mask in Crystal Lake

Jason Voorhees played by Richard Brooker during Friady The 13th Part 3 (1982).

In the almost 50 years that Jason Voorhees has existed as a slasher icon in film, the character’s visage has become synonymous with wearing a hockey mask. Yet, in Crystal Lake no version of the character ever puts the plastic mask on. What gives?

Many might assume it was a rights-holder issue with the owners of the IP license. Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane told Variety that was not the case here.“There were really no issues rights-wise with the show,” Kane explained. “We weren’t given any particular parameters about what we could and couldn’t do."

Kane said they had more timeline discussions about the hockey mask and when it would make sense to appear. “That’s such an iconic look for Jason and that’s what everybody thinks about,” he said of the hockey mask. "But we’re doing a show that predates Pamela’s murder in the first movie, and the hockey mask … obviously, we all know that didn’t come until the third movie. This is the Star Wars of slashers … It’s episode three.” And that’s why we only see the Friday the 13th Part 2 burlap mask on Jason.
