Has Keegan-Michael Key Hosted Saturday Night Live?

The actor and comedian returns as the voice of Toad in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which hits theaters on April 1.

The cast members of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie — which arrives in theaters everywhere on April 1 — are making the rounds again and showing up on all your favorite TV shows and news programs. 

Jack Black, who voices Bowser in the animated sequel, will serve as Host of Saturday Night Live on April 4, marking his fifth time hosting the sketch comedy show.

Several other stars of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie have hosted SNL over the years, including Chris Pratt during the Season 40 premiere in September of 2014, and Anya Taylor-Joy for the Season 46 finale in May of 2021.

But has Keegan-Michael Key — who voiced a lovable little character in 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie and returns for its sequel — ever hosted SNL? The actor and comedian certainly seems like a natural fit for the show, considering his sketch comedy roots as the co-creator and co-star of the series Key & Peele and as a cast member on MADtv.

Has Keegan-Michael Key ever hosted Saturday Night Live?

Key hosted SNL once, on May 15, 2021. The Season 46 episode featured Olivia Rodrigo as the musical guest.

His monologue included a musical number that also featured Kenan Thompson and Cecily Strong, and a bit involving being confused by an audience member for his friend and frequent collaborator Jordan Peele.

The episode featured the sketch "High School Graduation," which saw Key play one of several proud parents who kept hilariously interrupting a graduation ceremony.

In another sketch, "The Muppet Show," Key played one of two overzealous bodyguards who gave a beatdown to a couple of the iconic puppets.

Who does Keegan-Michael Key voice in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

Just like he did in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Key voices Toad in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Toad is the longtime ally of Mario and Luigi and a proud resident of the Mushroom Kingdom.

While Toad is usually level-headed and reserved, one of the film's trailers shows him being rather unenthused about the addition of Yoshi to the squad. "So, some dinosaur just shows up and he's now part of the group?" Toad asks.
