The ending of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Explained
Two primary storylines propel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. First is Bowser Jr.'s relentless personal mission to find and free his shrunken and imprisoned dad, King Bowser, from the Mushroom Kingdom. Obsessed with making his warrior dad proud, the little despot hopes to impress him with his creation — Planet Bowser. Despite the gargantuan daddy issues, Jr. wants to rule the universe together.
Second, Princess Peach wants to find out how she came to live in the Mushroom Kingdom as a child. When a frightened Luma from the Comet Observatory arrives, begging for help to find his missing mom, Princess Rosalina, Peach heeds the call. She leaves the keys to the Mushroom Kingdom to Mario and Luigi, and brings Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) with her to venture into the bigger galaxy. Along the way, Peach remembers Rosalina from her childhood, and comes to discover that they are long-lost sisters. And by combining their powers, they can save the universe!

Near the climax of the sequel, a Power-Upped Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi have an epic battle with Dry Bones Bowser and a masked Bowser Jr. The antagonistic father and son combo is ultimately defeated by princess power as Peach and Rosalina reunite and combine their powers to destroy Bowser Jr.'s power draining machine. They’re able to obliterate his Boomsday Machine weapon, and turn the vile Planet Bowser into a lush, green utopia.
Victorious, Princess Peach welcomes Rosalina and her adopted Luma children to the Mushroom Kingdom, but her castle has been destroyed. Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and the Luma kids rally together with the Mushroom Kingdom residents to rebuild the entire castle. Mario grabs a Cape Feather Power-Up that allows him to triumphantly glide to the very top of the castle flagpole, thus ending the movie.
