  • The Premier League’s top-four and European qualification races remain tight, with key implications across Matchweek 36, including Liverpool–Chelsea as a featured matchup.
  • Several fixtures carry major stakes for title hopes, European spots, and relegation survival, with Manchester City, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, and Everton all under pressure.
  • England will have at least eight clubs in Europe next season, with qualification outcomes influenced by league position and results in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and ongoing European competitions.

With three matchweeks left to go in the 2025/26 Premier League season on Peacock, the league table is looking especially enticing. At the top, after Manchester City dropped points in a 3-3 draw with Everton on Monday, Arsenal now sits five points clear of the Citizens, who have a game in hand. The Gunners face a tough test against West Ham this weekend, while Pep Guardiola and Co. host Brentford. Just below them, Manchester United solidified their place in next season’s Champions League with a win against Liverpool last weekend, but the Reds and Aston Villa are now only six points ahead of Bournemouth with three games to go.

Interestingly, only five points separate Bournemouth in 6th from Sunderland in 12th, meaning the battle for European qualification is far from over! And at the bottom of the table, Tottenham has escaped the relegation zone with a win over Aston Villa last weekend. They now sit in 17th, one point ahead of West Ham in 18th.

So yeah, there's a lot happening in the Premier League this weekend on Peacock

What to watch for in Liverpool vs. Chelsea this weekend on Peacock

Marc Cucurella of Chelsea kicks the ball during the Premier League match between Chelsea and Nottingham Forest.

Sitting in 4th place in the table, Liverpool are coming off a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United last Sunday. The Reds are level on points with Aston Villa in 5th and six points clear of Bournemouth in 6th. A win on Saturday would be crucial for Arne Slot as they look to return to the Champions League next season. With Hugo Ekitike ruled out for the season and it being unclear if Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak will be fit to feature in this one, Liverpool may be undermanned up front against a Chelsea defense that has conceded 13 goals in their last five Premier League matches.

Chelsea has lost their last six Premier League matches, failing to score in five of them. Manager Liam Rosenior was sacked by the club, leaving interim head coach Calum McFarlane to finish the campaign. The Blues have fallen to 9th place in the table, four points away from Bournemouth in 6th. A win against Liverpool on Saturday would give McFarlane a huge boost in the team’s quest for European football next season, but Chelsea will face a difficult test at Anfield.

Peacock's coverage for Liverpool vs. Chelsea starts Saturday, May 9 at 7 a.m. ET live from Anfield.

What are the other storylines for Matchweek 36 of the Premier League?

Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa runs on the field during the Premier League match between Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.

After Liverpool takes on Chelsea, Sunderland hosts Manchester United at the Stadium of Light. The Red Devils are already qualified for next season’s Champions League, but Bruno Fernandes will be looking to match or break the assist record in this one. At the same time, Brighton hosts already-relegated Wolves in a must-win game for the Seagulls, who are only two points behind Bournemouth in 6th. Rounding out Saturday’s action is a massive game for the title race as Manchester City hosts Brentford. Pep Guardiola’s men cannot afford to drop any more points, but they will face a difficult Brentford side vying for European football.

On Sunday, relegated Burnley hosts Aston Villa in a must-win game for Unai Emery’s men. Villa has lost their last two Premier League matches and any more dropped points will allow Bournemouth to creep up on them. Our final game on Peacock this weekend features Everton visiting Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. The Toffees are also in the mix for European qualification and a win on Sunday would be crucial to their aspirations for next season.

How many Premier League teams can qualify for Europe next season?

Due to England’s top rating in the UEFA coefficient table (which is a collective measurement of a nation’s teams’ performances in the European competitions), there will be at least eight Premier League teams in Europe next season. The teams that finish in the top five of the Premier League table will automatically qualify for next season’s Champions League. After them, there will be two English teams that qualify for the Europa League. These two spots are reserved for whichever team finishes in 6th place and the winner of the FA Cup (the final is set for May 16th between Manchester City and Chelsea).

It is important to note that if Manchester City wins the FA Cup, then because they are already qualified for the Champions League, 6th and 7th place would qualify for the Europa League. If Chelsea is victorious, it will depend upon where they finish in the table.

Finally, the winner of the Carabao Cup receives a spot in the Conference League. Yet, because Manchester City won this season’s Carabao Cup and is already set to qualify for the Champions League, the Conference League spot will pass to the team that finishes in 7th. If Manchester City win the FA Cup as detailed above, then 8th place would qualify for the Conference League. It is also important to note that if any English teams win the current competitions for the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, the qualification places can be impacted.

Fantasy Premier League players to watch in Matchweek 36

Erling Haaland of Manchester City

Erling Haaland - Manchester City

Haaland is in fine form with three goals in his last three Premier League matches. With this game being a must-win for Manchester City at home at the Etihad, Haaland will be called upon to deliver.

Jack Hinshelwood

Hinshelwood has two goals in his last two games and faces a Wolves defense that has not kept a clean sheet since February.

Dominik Szoboszlai

Szoboszlai scored and assisted against Manchester United last time out, and with Salah and Isak set to potentially miss Liverpool’s clash against Chelsea, the Reds will lean on Szoboszlai to lead their attack.
