When does the 2026 FIFA World Cup start?
Though countdown concerts are set to take place in the three host countries -- Canada, Mexico, and the United States -- on June 10, the 2026 FIFA World Cup proper will not begin until June 11. That's when Mexico will host the first of three opening ceremonies (Canada and the U.S. will host opening ceremonies June 12), and when the first games in Group Stage play begin.
The Group Stage will feature all 48 teams, broken into 12 groups of four teams each, all competing across more than two weeks of round robin action. Each team will play the other three teams in their group once, and the top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third place finishers across all groups, will move on to the Knockout Stage of the competition. The Group Stage will eliminate 16 total teams from World Cup play.
