Golden Globe winner Anya Taylor-Joy returns to take up her scepter again as Princess Peach, the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Peach gets even more screen time as she sets out on a rescue mission to find and meet mystery ruler Rosalina. Kidnapped by big, bad Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie), Rosalina also has ties to Peach’s hazy past.
Taylor-Joy’s performance as Princess Peach in The Super Mario Bros. Movie (now on Peacock!) was her very first voice-acting role for an animated feature. She now embodies the character for a whole new generation of Nintendo Mario gamers and movie fans.
In a March interview with Seth Meyers for Late Night with Seth Meyers, the actress said there’s an unexpected perk about getting to be part of this sequel. "I think what I really love about it is because animation takes such a long time, I'm often working on separate projects, and then I get to come back and visit Peach and that’s really nice,” she said.

Why did Anya Taylor-Joy throw up after her first animation voice session?
Though Taylor-Joy voiced the puppetry character of Brea in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019), Princess Peach remains the actress’s only animation role. Because of that, she’s still learning the specific idiosyncrasies of performing in an action-centric animated feature.
In that same interview with Meyers, Taylor-Joy revealed that there was a physical learning curve that she did not expect. "The first time I ever did a session, I did not realize how taxing it would be, because you're yelling continuously the whole time,” she explained. "I think the first time I ever did it, I threw up. I drank so much water and I was like, 'Gotta do it!’"
She also learned about acting out "efforts," the animation industry's term for an actor making excitable noises during a voice session, which the audio team can use to really sell animated action sequences.
“You do it at the end of a session and it's essentially like the action sequence, but you're doing it standing by yourself in a booth,” Taylor-Joy told Meyers. "So you're like, 'Ha! Hyah!' And you're just doing that for like half an hour, which makes you feel really cool."
