Dallas Mavericks vs. Detroit Pistons
After five games, the Mavericks are 2–3. Fresh off a 107–105 victory on Wednesday against the Indiana Pacers, Jason Kidd will be looking for back-to-back wins on Saturday to help build momentum going forward. To do that, Dallas will need to improve their scoring when they have the ball. Through their first five games, the Mavs have struggled on offense, scoring more than 107 points only once. This is in large part due to the absence of star point guard Kyrie Irving, who is still recovering from a torn ACL suffered last season. In his stead, Cooper Flagg has largely taken over point guard duties, a position he has never really played before at any level. Even with D'Angelo Russell signed in the offseason, Kidd has still opted to start games with Flagg at point guard and Russell coming off the bench. Flagg has begun his NBA career averaging 13.4 points per game, 6.2 rebounds per game, and 2.8 assists per game. He is clearly still adjusting to life in the NBA, but being forced to play a new position so early on in his development will be great experience to learn from for the No. 1 pick. Flagg may need to step up and take on a larger role on offense against the Pistons on Saturday with 10x all-star Anthony Davis’ status currently up in the air. Davis suffered a lower leg injury against the Pacers and left the game after only seven minutes. He averaged 25 points per game across his first four starts of the season and his scoring will need to be replaced against a physical Detroit defense if Davis ends up being ruled out. With Derrick Lively II and Daniel Gafford also dealing with injuries right now, the Mavs’ frontcourt depth will be tested if all three are not deemed fit enough to play.
The Pistons are currently sixth in the Eastern Conference standings with a 3–2 record after five games. After suffering a 116–95 defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday, the Pistons bounced back with a convincing 135–-116 victory over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff will be hoping Wednesday’s victory can build momentum for the team ahead of a difficult matchup against the Mavs on Saturday. All-star Cade Cunningham is enjoying a strong start to the season, averaging 22.2 points and 8.2 assists so far. Detroit will continue to rely on him, especially in the absence of Jaden Ivey who is nursing a right knee injury. Jalen Duren will support Cunningham offensively, as he is averaging a double double to start the year with 14.8 points and 10 rebounds per game. Behind Duren and Cunningham, rising stars Ausar Thompson and Ron Holland II are continuing to develop for this youthful Pistons team. Both Thompson and Holland II bring an abundance of energy and intensity on defense and will have their hands full potentially guarding No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg. A win against Dallas on Saturday would push Detroit to 4–2 for the year and they will be eager to make another playoff push in a wide-open Eastern Conference.
