We're now more than a week into the 2026 Major League Baseball season. In baseball terms, that's barely any time at all, as the season will continue for the next five months, but baseball's played so frequently that we're already learning a lot about each team.

How to Watch

Watch Sunday Night Baseball on NBC and Peacock.

In just a week, we've seen veterans show up and prove they've still got it, along with rising stars emerging in the spotlight. This week on Sunday Night Baseball, we get a mixture of both, as the Detroit Tigers wrap up their home opener series with a primetime matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, April 5, exclusively on Peacock.

This week's Sunday Night Baseball matchup closes out a three-game series that begins Friday and continues through the weekend, so both the Cardinals and the Tigers will be quite familiar with each other and hoping to close out the trio of games on a high note. It all begins at 7:20 p.m. ET, live from Comerica Park in Detroit, and you'll be able to catch all the action live on Peacock

The game will mark the second start of the season for Tigers legend Justin Verlander, who at 43 is the oldest active player in the league. He struggled a bit in his first start of the season, which marked his return to Detroit after nearly a decade away, so it'll be interesting to see if he can get in rhythm early. He'll face Cardinals pitchers Kyle Leahy, now in his fourth MLB season.

But much of the focus for this game will be on the offense, and both teams have rising stars in that department. For the Cardinals, it's JJ Wetherholt, who's already logged the first home run of his MLB career, along with several RBIs. For the Tigers, it's Kevin McGonigle, who made his MLB debut with Detroit last month after three seasons with their farm teams. McGonigle is already proving himself as an offensive weapon, and it'll be exciting to see how he matures.

When the game begins, Peacock will hand you over to the play-by-play voice of Jason Benetti, who'll be joined in the booth by two former MLB players with ties to the competing teams. Brad Thompson, who won a World Series with the Cardinals in 2006, will be on hand, as will former Tigers outfielder Andy Dirks. Peacock's "Inside the Pitch" coverage for this game will be led by Adam Ottavino.
